Commissioned to make a series of topographical linocuts and etchings, Flanagan visited Loch Ness at the time of a conference on the Loch Ness monster. Whilst at Loch Ness he attended a Mass - the first he had heard in English - at the Abbey at Fort Augustus. He has said that the red colour of this print was inspired by the vestments of priests at the service (from an interview with Jeremy Lewison by the Tate Gallery, 21 August 1985).
