Edward Bawden spent three weeks in Greece as an official war artist in 1944. This work depicts the war memorial on the Greek island of Serifos known as the Memorial of the Fallen in Kato Chora with the chapel of St Antonios just behind. The Memorial honours residents of Serifos who perished in the Valcan Wars, the First World War and the Greco-Turkish wars.
