Frink settled in France with her new husband in 1967. In the country, near the Camargue, she saw boars in the wild and was inspired to produce a number of images of them. Earlier works depicting boars, including the sculpture in David Bowie's collection, arose ten years before, when Frink was commissioned to create a boar sculpture for Harlow Sculpture Town, Essex.
