Biography

Elizabeth Spurr (1912–1987) was a British artist celebrated for her contributions as a sculptor, printmaker, and painter. Born in the UK, she pursued her art education at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London, where she studied under the esteemed sculptor John Skeaping. Skeaping regarded her as "by far the most talented" among his private pupils, noting her assistance in his artistic endeavors.

 

Spurr's early sculptures exhibited Cubist influences, reflecting the stylistic tendencies of her mentors, including Skeaping and Barbara Hepworth. Her versatility extended to printmaking, where she produced innovative colored monotypes and etchings. She contributed to publications such as Everyman Prints, produced by the Associated Independent Artists (AIA).
