Born in St Ives where he remained for his whole life, Bryan Pearce is recognised as a significant naïve artist and Peter Lanyon once said the artist’s learning disability gave his work ‘an awareness more direct’ than pure observation. Here a vivid still life of tulips and daffodils pop against the simple horizontal striped beach view, the spiked orange forms of the flower heads jutting into the landscape, the more rounded water jug beside the still life offering a slight balance to the otherwise very linear composition. Pearce’s characteristic flat style of representation is emphasised further by the heavy orange outlines which are reminiscent of stained glass windows.
