Biography

Earl Haig (1918–2009), also known as George Alexander Eugene Douglas Haig, 2nd Earl Haig, was a Scottish artist recognized for his evocative landscape paintings. Although he was the son of Field Marshal Douglas Haig, the celebrated World War I commander, he forged his own path in the arts, developing a deep connection to the Scottish countryside, which became the primary focus of his work.

Haig studied at the Camberwell School of Art and was influenced by both the Scottish Colourists and European modernist movements. His landscape paintings are known for their expressive brushwork, rich textures, and a strong sense of atmosphere. He often depicted the rolling hills, lochs, and rugged terrain of the Scottish Borders, where he lived at Bemersyde House. His works capture the changing moods of the landscape, from brooding, misty scenes to vibrant, sunlit vistas.

Throughout his career, Haig remained dedicated to painting, exhibiting widely in Scotland and beyond. His landscapes stand as a testament to his ability to convey the spirit of the land, blending traditional influences with his own distinctive vision. Today, his work continues to be appreciated for its depth, emotion, and masterful handling of color and form.
