Dennis George Knowland was a well known painter in oils of landscapes, figure subjects and interiors. He was born in London and after encouragement in his painting from R O Dunlop he attended Chelsea School of Art in 1935. During army service in Scotland in World War II he was lent a studio by Anne Redpath and after demobilisation he spent three years at Camberwell School of Art under Coldstream and Gowing. Dennis Knowland exhibited with the London Group and New English Art Club, and showed extensively in the provinces and abroad. Between 1949-72 he examined for London University and taught art in Oxfordshire. A memorial show was held at the Central Library, Oxford in 1987.
