Philip Matthews was a painter of portraits, landscapes and still-life in oils. He studied at Maidenhead School of Art and the Euston Road School. Between 1939 and 1940 he was one of the first private students taken by William Coldstream at 8 Fitzroy Street where he also met Graham Bell and Victor Pasmore. Philip Matthews exhibited at the RA, NEAC, LG and the Leicester Galleries and he showed with the Euston Road School painters in 1948 at Wakefield Art Gallery. From 1946 to 1981 he taught at Camberwell School of Art, becoming Head of Fine ARt in 1964. His work is represented in many public collections. His painting style was based on the observant realism of Euston Road and the technique taught to him by Coldstream. His landscapes and figures show the underlying structure of forms in blocked areas of colour.
