During the 1950s and 1960s Alan Reynolds was renowned for his paintings of the English landscape, particularly that of the fenlands of his native Suffolk and the hop gardens and orchards of Kent where he would move permanently. His landscapes of the early 1950s which carefully balance muted, earthy colours, evoke the essential vitality of the natural world. Like many post war British artists, his painting was anchored in naturalism but becoming increasingly abstract. In this work, the plants and trees are transformed into anthropomorphic presences. Standing among these forms is the dark and looming frieze of farm buildings. The measured arrangement of forms creates an eerie stillness that adds to the mystery of this atmospheric landscape.
