Writing on the subject of water and reflections, John Hubbard said ‘Many of my reflections involve water, more specifically the sea. I suppose a reflection is really the visual equivalent of an echo, but more effective in enlarging the subject’. The flowing white of the righthand side of the composition catches the eye first, bruising into grey in places with hints of violet alluding to movement, suggesting perhaps the tumbling of water, perhaps moving over rocks and stones, or maybe the sea washing over the shore. This dynamism is tempered somewhat on the opposite side of the work with dappled greens, seemingly echoing various shades and melding with warm beiges in flat, angular patches which are in contrast with the painterly wash of white; shimmering, fractured light suggesting the reflection of something, potentially green foliage upon the water.
