American-born Abstract Impressionist painter, John Hubbard was known for his landscape painting which went beyond mere depiction, instead recreating the experience of a particular place, inspired in part by traditional Eastern art forms, later saying ‘I really like the Chinese idea of allowing a subject in landscape to absorb you, or the other way around, and then be assayed in a spontaneous, animated way, so as to preserve the sense of life’. This example was produced in the same year Hubbard had started to focus primarily on landscape, previously he had flitted around a number of subjects, notably at this time, fruit and vegetable stalls in the Campo de’ Fiori, Rome where he lived.
