Born in Hampstead in 1934, Rachel was one of three children from the relationship of artists Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth.
However,it wasn't until later in life, following her mother's death in 1975, that at the age of 41 Rachel began to paint.
Undoubtedly influenced by Ben Nicholson, her Father, Rachel at first began to paint still life compositions, developing over the years into a whole range of landscape images ranging from Cumbria, Derbyshire and, unsurprisingly, Cornwall.
Her first solo exhibition was held in 1979 at the Field Gallery, Nottingham. This was followed soon after, in 1980, by her first solo London exhibition, at the Montpelier Studio, where she continued to exhibit for the next 20 years. It was at her first solo London exhibition that Ben Nicholson attended and was heard to comment "I had never realised she could paint so well. I would have been happy to have painted that one myself".
